So, I just finished reading all the recommend books that people have given me and I need a new read. What do I like you ask? Well, I am relatively new to the enjoyable, hobby reading world so I'm still fine tuning my likes/dislikes. Here are the books I have read lately and what I thought of them.
A Kite Runner is the book I finished last night and, like A Thousand Splendid Suns, it was haunting. I loved both books, but I think I need something a bit lighter next time. If you haven't read these, you must. They take place in Afghanistan over the last 40 years and it is astounding to hear about the atrocities that are happening there. It has also helped me understand the war and why it is so important to stop the Taliban.

I do love John Grisham and all his courtroom tales. There really isn't a Grisham book I don't like. I know I haven't read them all so I can get my fix again sometime. Maybe it's the wanna-be lawyer in me. I've wanted to go to law school for a long time. Anyhow, something like The Rainmaker are the type of books I really like.
Then there are the Stephanie Meyer series of Eclipse, New Moon and Twilight. This is a huge rave, especially in the LDS community and every girl seems to be in love with Edward. Not me. I thought the series was okay and I'm sure I'll read the next one scheduled to come out in August '08, but it was a bit too fairy tale/unrealistic for me. The lawyer in me wants truth and facts, mixed in with a bit of fiction. This series is too far fetched for me. I know I have offended some Bella/Edward/Jacob lovers out there, but that's my opinion and this is my blog. So if you can recommend something UNLIKE this then I am all ears.

So, has anyone read a good book lately that they want to share? I love getting into something that I just can't put down and that I would rather read than sleep for. Suggestions?

I read the Kite Runner and loved it and I've been wanting to read A thousand Splendid Suns, I think that will be next on my list. I also love all John Grisham novels, I just read his latest book The Innocent Man, which is actually a true story and I really liked it.
Have you read any of the Dan Brown books? He's the author of the Da Vinci Code, and he also has 3 other books. I've read all 4 and I think my favourites were Angels & Demons and Deception Point. They are totally suspenseful and make you think and I can never put them down, let me know if you read them!
Okay. So, books are a passion of mine. I agree with the Twilight series. It was cute enough, but certainly young if you know what I mean. I have given a few suggestions on my blog, but here are a few more. I actually would recommend a few young adult books that are excellant. Kira Kira and A Single Shard are two of my favorites in that category (Ella Enchanted, Beauty, and The Princess Academy are also good.) I just read The Wednesday Letters which was beautiful. Also, The Choice by Nicholas Sparks. Both of those books are family drama fiction. They are good. I almost forced my hubbie to read The Wednesday Letters just so he could get a clue ;) I actually enjoy the fantasy genre, but it sounds like you aren't as interested in that. If you ever change your mind though and want to try something The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is one of the best and there are some excellent members of the church that write within that genre. Ender's Game is a thriller with a twist written by a member of the church that has become hugely acclaimed among the sci-fi/fantasy world. Anyway. Let me know what you think.
What about some of the classics? Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis, Charlies Dickens or Mark Twain? Jane and Charles happen to be my fave but I like all the history of British society that comes with them. I'd love to hear what you chose.
I'm so glad to have finally found someone who feels the same way about the Twilight books! I'm on the third one and I am reading it simply because everyone else has. Lame, I know. I love to read, but I'm all about fluff. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorites... but he's super predictable. I am going to check out Kite Runner after I'm done with Eclipse. I wish I had recommendations for you! I was in a book club in Utah and we read one called "Stolen Lives". It's really good.
I'll send you a list but in the meantime - and for anybody reading comments - "Winter Soltice", "September", and "The Shell Seeker" all by Rosamin Pilcher are wonderful, long and 'sink your teeth into' books, imo. More recent favs are "Water for Elephants", "The Memory Keepers Daughter", "Snow Flower & The Secret Fan" - not sure of those authors. love, mom
Thanks for the suggestions. I got Kite Runner and Splendid Suns for Christmas- read Kite Runner, but I kind of needed a break before I started SS - so I haven't read it quite yet. I really got into Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet a few years back. It is pretty interesting. His sequel to it came out this fall, At World's End - and I was so excited. I read it, and it was pretty good, but not nearly as good as Pillars. If you read it, let me know what you think! I also LOVED the Children of the Promise Series by Dean Hughes.
